THIRTY-FIVE

WYATT

Marco reported for work and left Wyatt to his own devices.

He offered Wyatt a job as a barback if he needed a distraction, but he declined. Especially after all the insightful information Marco shared with him. The fact that Landon could be mid-air right now changes everything.

There’s still time…

Wyatt’s over the initial shock that his son has been kidnapped. Every minute that stretches forward now is a lost opportunity to find him.

Yet time keeps marching on. He wishes he could pause it, or slow it down, so he can figure a few things out.

There’re many possibilities if they indeed smuggled Landon out of the country.

An immediate amber alert was issued, which would’ve made commercial air travel difficult. Although, if they came specifically for Landon, Wyatt has to believe they’d create a passport for him. They could have a private plane. His boy would fight them tooth and nail, though. There’s no way he’d go willingly with a stranger.

He barely obliged his own parents.

Although Wyatt has to remember they got him too. He was tricked—drugged.

Landon is only four. He may be obstinate at times, but his fear would overcome his feistiness in this case.

“Ah, God.” The thoughts of what his little boy is going through are stifling. He shouldn’t be doing this alone. If Rowan’s as determined to find Landon as he is they should be working together.

No one knows him better.

Wyatt texts Rowan.

Wyatt: Call me. I have information to share.

He feels so utterly disconnected, a state away, even though the detectives promised they’d keep him informed. If they’re assuming anything they tell Rowan will be communicated to him, they’re sadly mistaken. He understands her rage to an extent, but they don’t have time to be mad at each other right now. Let Rowan fume after they’ve put their heads together to recover their son.

Rowan calls him. “What is it?” She sounds tired.

“Hi, it’s good to hear your voice.”

“Don’t do that. Tell me what you have.”

“Okay. Marco did some research while we were—”

“Marco? Stop there. He once tried to convince me you guys hadn’t been smoking weed by rubbing a copper ring on his cheek. He told me it would turn green if you’d been exposed to cannabis.”

“Do you even want to find him?”

“What?” She clucks. That annoying sound… “How dare you?”

“I just told you I might have a lead.”

“Okay. What did Marco say?” she snaps.

“The market for organ harvesting is entirely overseas.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means they likely had to transport Landon alive. He needs to be healthy at the time of his surgery. And if his recipient is located internationally, we may have more time than we think.”

“It’s been four days, Wyatt.”

“Think about it. Don’t lump this into other child abduction cases. Our son has to be alive to get what they need from him.”

“Wouldn’t they have already taken it by now?”

“Do you think it would be easy to transport a little boy out of the country? One everyone is looking for? Flying commercially would be impossible.”

“Okay… I see what you’re saying.
